Bancha Ujitawara – Light, Refreshing Everyday Japanese Green Tea

Our quality Bancha Ujitawara comes from Tsuzuki District, Ujitawara, in Kyoto Prefecture. Bancha is a beloved everyday Japanese green tea, harvested after the first spring picking used for sencha. This later harvest, starting in summer, includes the larger leaves and upper stems usually left out of sencha production.

The result is a gentle, easygoing green tea that's less fragrant and slightly more astringent than young sencha, with a fine, light and clean flavor. Bancha is wonderfully refreshing and is known in Japan as a palate cleanser after meals. It's also naturally lower in caffeine than many green teas.

Tasting Notes

  • Liquor: bright yellow-green
  • Aroma: exceptionally green and vegetal
  • Flavor: fine, light and clean
  • Finish: refreshing, with a gentle astringency

Why You'll Love It

Bancha Ujitawara is the kind of simple, satisfying green tea that's enjoyed every day in Japanese homes. It's light, refreshing and easy to drink, with a bright yellow-green cup that would brighten even the dullest of days. Its lower caffeine makes it a great choice for afternoons and evenings.

How to Enjoy

Enjoy it with or after meals as a refreshing palate cleanser, or keep a pot on hand throughout the day. It's also lovely iced in summer and pairs well with rice dishes, noodles and savory snacks.

Light, clean and wonderfully refreshing, Bancha Ujitawara is Japanese everyday tea at its best. It's the perfect tea to brew by the pot and share with family and friends.

This has been my everyday tea for over two years now. I used to switch between a few varieties of greens, but having found Tealyra and this Bancha, I've not needed to look elsewhere. It's offered at a great price and I buy it in bulk. Tealyra customer service is also stellar; once my parcel was lost and they quickly sent out a replacement.

One of the nicest banchas I've ever tried. As another reviewer pointed out, it almost tastes like a sencha in terms of how creamy and mellow it is. Very little bitterness or astringency (I only brew for one minute, however) and very easy to drink. The caffeine content listed on the site seems to be pretty accurate, as compared to other green teas I've had, this one has much less of a stimulating effect. Would thoroughly recommend to anyone looking for a low-caffeine green tea without compromising on flavour.

Wonderful marine flavours. Almost as lively as a sencha. A calm, smooth drink. Clean and slightly creamy. Scent of linden blossoms.
Such a nice morning tea.
I brew cool and long in a kyusu at 66°C for over 3 minutes to bring out the slight astringency that I favour.

nice bancha for a nice price, originally had a little bit of a packaging scent however after airing the tea out briefly it dissipated. simple, vegetal infusion with not too much sweetness. lived up to my expectations and no flaws that I have found. no complexity but that's to be expected with this tea.
