Decaf Yunnan Ripe Pu'erh – Smooth, Low-Caffeine Pu-erh Tea

Decaf Yunnan Pu’erh brings together traditional Pu’erh craftsmanship and modern low-caffeine tea processing, creating a smooth, deeply flavorful tea that preserves the character of authentic Yunnan Pu’erh while offering a gentler drinking experience.

The tea begins with high-quality sun-dried material produced from large-leaf tea trees grown in Yunnan’s renowned tea regions, including Xishuangbanna and Lincang. These areas are closely associated with Pu’erh production and provide the rich leaf material needed to develop the tea’s characteristic depth, complexity, and ability to mature over time.

Freshly harvested leaves first follow the classic stages of Pu’erh production: withering, fixation, rolling, and sun-drying. This traditional preparation preserves the natural compounds and aromatic precursors within the leaf, creating a strong foundation for the fermentation process that follows.

A Modern Approach to Decaffeinated Pu’erh

What makes this tea especially unique is that decaffeination takes place before the final Pu’erh fermentation.

A low-temperature physical extraction process, performed at approximately 30–50°C, is designed to remove more than 90% of the caffeine while minimising the impact on the tea’s natural aroma, flavour, and internal composition. The gentle temperature is particularly important for preserving the character of the original tea material before fermentation begins.

Once decaffeinated, the tea continues through the traditional post-fermentation process used to create ripe Pu’erh. Temperature, moisture, and time are carefully controlled as the leaves undergo microbial transformation, gradually developing the deep color, mellow texture, and mature aromatic character associated with Shu Pu’erh.

The result is not simply a decaffeinated dark tea—it retains the recognizable structure and personality of traditional Pu’erh.

Aroma & Flavor

The dry and infused leaves reveal a calm, mature aroma with subtle honey-like sweetness.

As the tea opens in hot water, layers of flavour gradually emerge:

  • Jujube and red-date sweetness

  • Soft woody notes

  • Gentle longan-like fruitiness

  • Mellow aged character

  • Subtle fermented sweetness

The liquor is smooth, silky, and rounded, with very little bitterness or harshness. Even when steeped longer, the cup stays pleasantly soft and clean.

A gentle natural sweetness develops through the finish, followed by a lingering aged aroma that encourages another sip.

Made for Multiple Infusions

Like traditional Pu’erh, Decaf Yunnan Pu’erh performs beautifully through repeated steepings. Each infusion reveals a slightly different balance of aged wood, mellow fruit, and natural sweetness.

The first infusions tend to be smooth and aromatic, while later steepings become increasingly soft and sweet.

It can be enjoyed completely on its own, but its deep and mellow profile also pairs beautifully with dried tangerine peel, red dates, or a splash of milk.

Pu’erh Character With Less Caffeine

Decaf Yunnan Pu’erh is an excellent option for tea drinkers who enjoy the richness of fermented tea but prefer to reduce their caffeine intake. Its smooth nature makes it especially enjoyable as an afternoon or evening cup.

Importantly, the decaffeination process is designed to preserve the components necessary for continued post-fermentation and maturation. Like traditional Pu’erh, the tea can therefore continue to develop additional smoothness and complexity with proper storage over time.

Decaf Yunnan Pu’erh represents a thoughtful meeting of Yunnan tea tradition and contemporary tea processing - deep and satisfying in flavour, naturally mellow in character, and considerably lighter in caffeine.

It's been a few years since I've had puerh due to serious health issues, being bedridden due to long covid, pots ect. I've improved alot but I still cant drink caffeine. I had to sell off my puerh collection which was sad, but this puerh has brightened my day since it tastes so close to the real thing. it's very similar to 'cream' from white 2 tea. So thankful for this decaf stuff.
